- He was raised in a small fishing town called Grayland, Washington which is located 130 miles away from Seattle.
- His father was a victim of alcoholism which eventually led to his parents legally parting ways when he was quite young. After this, Colin and his sister were mostly brought up by their mother.
- As a child, Colin was a loner and would oftentimes sit on the roof of his home listening to baseball commentary on the radio.
- He was on his high school football team as a quarterback and on the basketball team as an All-Far West Conference guard.
- At Eastern Washington University, he shared a room with football player and coach Jim McElwain.
- One of his earliest jobs was as the play-by-play voice for the Las Vegas Stars of the San Diego Padres Triple-A.
